“On December 5th, 1932, Hayashi Department Store opened and thus a modern age of Taiwanese culture began.”
This is stated on the website of Tainan’s Hayashi Department Store. It was restored and brought back to live again in 2013 so we get to see this elegant historical building again today. We of course took the chance to see it with our own eyes when we were in Tainan.
Let’s go inside and check out the floors!
On the fourth floor, there is a event hall and a Japanese style cafe. It’s more than just a department store!
This place is the first building in Taiwan’s history to have elevator system. That was back in 1932. Tainan people at that time would come to this department store only to have a look at this fancy new stuff!!
Or if you prefer stairs, their staircase is also very beautiful and elegantly designed.
Keep going up to the semi-open space fifth floor, here you can find some stores offering food.
Actually you can go further up to the top floor, where you can see the panorama view of the city. The design of the architecture is very innovative, check out the photos below to get a feeling.
