this Dean’s Tokyo Snapshots series ( #dean-tokyo as a specific tag) is my photographic diary for my family trip to Tokyo. Due to busy schedule and a naughty boy with us, I won’t be able to write much but I will make sure that every photo that I choose means something, at least to me… I hope you enjoy this photo series as well as me! Feel free to comment but I probably won’t have much time making replies often. Apologies first. :p

🍙 Dean's Tokyo Snapshots 🍙 Religion and Death

There are lots of small temples or shrines around when you are walking on the streets and lanes of Tokyo. I am quite amazed by these cultural symbols as it means that traditions are still very important in this country. Especially these temples actually have a lot of common elements with temples in the Chinese regions while they surly have their own unique and charming Japanese essence too. In other words, they are familiar yet unfamiliar to me at the same time, making them irresistible for my cameras (I hope taking photos of these does not offend them as I would take a bow before I do XD).

Also, the other day I passed by a cemetery which allegedly is a very famous one for celebrities. I am also very intrigued by how death, something that every culture in the whole world has to deal with, plays its part in the Japanese culture. Based on my limited understanding of the Japanese culture (probably better than people from most places of the world as Taiwan is such a place that knows relatively a lot about Japan), death as a concept is deeply rooted in their culture. Even the activities like seeing the sakura blossoms falling have something to do with it. From my Chinese culture background, the tradition is to avoid talking about death, but I think in Japan it is less likely a taboo to talk about it. I actually like this kind of philosophy as obviously we cannot avoid death (at least not yet), so my own philosophy is always that your life won’t be peaceful if you don’t embrace the notion that death is coming and maybe coming any time.

So, anyway, religion and death, the eternal themes of human beings. Always so fascinating and so profound. So I am also thinking about it when we were strolling through the streets of Tokyo …

🍙 Dean's Tokyo Snapshots 🍙 Unforgettable Tokyo Steemit Meetup!

Tonight I had the privilege to meet with a bunch of great Japanese Steemians at Shiodome Tokyo. Thanks to @kinakomochi, who is the community manager of Steemit JP, for setting this meetup for me [previous announcement is here and here] and thanks to @yoshiko @kayoko @yasu24 @ytrphoto @tamito0201 for joining. You guys are really awesome! And I did not say this because you pay for my alcohol and food ^o^

We met at this place at 7pm - UOKIN PICCOLO 新橋店(ウオキンピッコロ) and it’s really great for me to experience this Izakaya culture with the locals because I cannot speak Japanese and this time I travel with my son so it’s not possible to bring a child here (thanks to my wife for taking care of him while I joined meetup). The place was packed and the energy was high.

The amazing thing about Steemian Meetups is that you never have to worry about what to talk about … we do have a lot of common topics and even know many common friends who we even have not met yet! Also, it won’t feel weird when you take out your phone to take photo of the food!! Haha! We are all bloggers and that’s what we do - sharing our life experience! Although we might not had communicated very smoothly, it was definitely one memorable night full of laughter and sincerity for me.

I think I might have expressed the notion that I don’t want to expose my personal images before meeting up, so they were very thoughtful and did not ask me for photos together. Still, I asked my Steemit substitute to take a photo with @yoshiko holding a Steemit banner … This lady is allegedly the mastermind behind the Steemit-jp conglomerate … She can do anything, really. ^_^

The other lady @kayoko sat in front of me. She was very kind to help everyone with tonight’s food. She uses knifes very professionally that a fish was dissected in no time. You don’t want to mess up with her…. lol

@kinakomochi is like the big brother of the group and takes care of everything. He is also very cheerful and easygoing person. Kind of like my first Japanese Steemian friend. Kudos to you, man!

DSC_6273.JPG

@tamito0201 sat next to me and he told me that he only joined Steemit a month ago! He is a stylish dude with a low-keyed sense of humor. Cool.

DSC_6277.JPG

@yasu24 seems to be a quieter guy who don’t talk much. But when we called it a night and walked to the metro station, Yasu and I talked a lot along the way and realized that we know many people in common like @htliao, @justyy and @travelgirl… etc and I was quite surprised to know his passion for this community! I was also moved that he told me he had to spend 2 hours in transit tonight just to join this meetup! Thanks Yasu!

@ytrphoto, another enthusiastic and energetic Steemian! He seems to know a lot of people, including in the crypto sphere and knows a lot of things! He loves to blog about food and really loves coffee. So he recommend me some places to visit while I am in Tokyo… Like the following.. Thanks Yotaro!

Some gifts from these lovely Steemians! They look so delicate!

Cannot thank you all enough for giving me such a unforgettable night! This is my first ever overseas Steemian Meetup so it means something to me. Hope to see you really soon! ❤️~~

🍙 Dean's Tokyo Snapshots 🍙 My Tokyo Crypto Find

I was pretty excited about feeling the power of crypto in Tokyo before I came here. After my arrival, I quickly shared my first encounter with bitcoin in Tokyo, which was … well, pretty lame. XD…

Now, a week has passed and I am cooling down now because: 1) I am traveling with family so most of those possible places that accept bitcoin payment seem not suitable for taking my son for a meal… >_< … and 2) crypto prices plummeted so I am less incentivized to spend them now…

So, instead of looking to spend them (but I will keep looking though), now I only look for signs of crypto here…

Here are two ways of finding crypto traces in Tokyo: 1) bookstores and 2) find the locations of those crypto companies and … well, take a shot and leave. lol

Bookstores

It seems crypto and blockchain related books are still hot in Tokyo… It’s a pity that I cannot read Japanese.

Crypto Companies

Roppongi Exchange !? Never heard of it, but good to know they exist! ^^

bitFlyer!! Probably the biggest crypto exchange in Japan and they are located near my hotel, inside the Tokyo Midtown. These photos show how far I can get to them. LOL~~~~

I hope you are not too disappointed… Trust me. I am paying much attention to this issue during my trip…. Hope I can bring more to you! ^^

🍙 Dean's Tokyo Snapshots 🍙 Luke's Lobster at Omotesando

DSC_5794.JPG

We ran into this street food store at Omotesando. It must be very good because … 1) it was almost 2pm and still many customers willing to sit or stand on the sidewalk to eat it and 2) it is not cheap at all!

DSC_5784.JPG

DSC_5792.JPG

So we decided to give it a shot …. ^_^ Herd behavior really works when you are traveling.

You may sit at these places …

This was what we ordered. A set of coffee, chips, and a combination roll of crab and lobster. It was a snack for us. The price is something like 1580 yen. Ouch!

DSC_5790.JPG

Yet, I was happy! ^^

DSC_5789.JPG

Looks delicious, doesn’t it!? yummy…

DSC_5788.JPG

Indeed, it tasted good. A flavor of the sea. Wonderful. People kept pouring in…
