“Leslie CHOW” from Hangover is in a hotel room next door to me!! Live from Taipei Taiwan…

It’s the man!

This afternoon (of Aug 1st), I was given a chance to personally participate in a Steemian type D-live reporting as right now my family is having a small getaway-from-daily-life vacation in Taipei (also for celebrating my wife’s birthday) and we came across this hilarious comedian in the hallway and later googled to confirm that it is him - the great CHOW the party king himself might live next door to us! (see the best of CHOW video here)

According to the news, CHOW, actually the Korean American actor Ken Jeong, played the main role Louis Huang’s younger brother Gene in the the second season finale of Fresh Off the Boat - a popular primetime comedy series that talks about the American life of a migrant family the Huangs from Taiwan. Season three is coming soon which will start with the Huangs on vacation in Taipei for Gene’s (CHOW’s) wedding. See the news here.

Report from the spot

The show is truly hilarious. We really love it. Yet still we don’t want to interfere with whatever the cast (I suppose) are doing next door. From time to time, we can hear a lot of laughing and talking sometimes yelling from next door - maybe they are having a party or maybe they are shooting? Can’t really tell and don’t want to eavesdrop too much. Cannot divulge the room number to the audience either (don’t have what it takes to be a parparazzi!). But still this is a D-live report post, I need to feed something to the audience here! So this is the window views of this hotel (the ones from CHOW’s room should be 98% similar). Our room is standard but the one next door is ensuite and much bigger - we guess it might be their temporary headquarter.

About the hotel and its story

Some may easily find out that the hotel is Regent Taipei (this information I think is ok) - a 5-start hotel run by a local hotel group Formosa International Hotels, the largest listed hotel operator in Taiwan. FIH acquired the Regent brand and Regent Hotels & Resorts becomes a Taiwan-based international luxury hotel group. This hotel is a very popular choice among Japanese tourists (lately increasing tourists from mainland China) and many internatioanl celebrities also like to stay here when they visit Taiwan. In our a few staying experience with Regent in recent years, we had bumped into Tom Cruise and then Hamasaki Ayumi (濱崎步). And this time CHOW! Aren’t we lucky?

Another well known story for Regent Taipei happened when Luc Besson chose Taipei and the Regent hotel and came here to film his movie Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson. It created a hype in Taiwan back then since it is rare for directors with international influence to take shots here. Of course, the sexy and charming star was also a huge factor in this. The interesting thing is that there is also a big Korean presence in this film including Korean gansters in the plot and Korean actors - Taiwan, Korea, Regent, and the entertainment industry. Final Note

Apologies to those who expect more from this encounter. All the contents are 100% genuine. The post is to reflect the fact that anyone here on Steemit can try to be a reporter. And my experience from this is: really excited but don’t know how to strike the balance and writing news style is really hard.

Sounds from heaven - introducing an indigenous song from Amis people in eastern Taiwan

In Taiwan there are roughly 550k indigenous population and Amis people is among the main indigenous peoples with 204k population (all minorities of course in contrast to total taiwan population being 23m). These indigenous peoples are so talented in singing and I am so attracted to their voices and music. So i wish to introduce it to the Steemit music community. All income from this post will be donated to indigenous peoples charity after realization as they usually suffer from a lower social rank and are deprived of many equal opportunities.

This song Elders Drinking Song is performed by the late Difang Duana (1921-2002) who were considered national asset in Taiwan. He was originally a Amis farmer from Taitung and later discovered by a musical professor. He then went all the way to become an internationally known artist. This song had gain global impact first in 1993 when Enigma incorporated part of it in their famous "Return To Innocence" and later the latter song was selected as the official song for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

It has magical power to bring peace to restless minds, to cure wounded hearts and to bring you vitality. Hope you enjoy it like me.

Since Steem is in its infancy (oh man what a huge baby it is!), and

Steemit.com is now Open Source

A lot of names will be needed for its ecosystem. So, let’s give it a try. I will start with a few:

Ecosysteem - naturally referring to Steem’s ecosystem. can be used as a tag.

Episteemology - all the research on Steem. sound very professional, huh?

Steemina - well, can this replace ‘voting power’? would be more fun!

Steemtroduction - yeah, I know everyone #introduceyourself. maybe we can use this as a new tag for launching new services, new apps, new tools for Steem? like the lauch of SteemStory.com and etc…

How are these? Oh, they are also great account names if not occupied yet…

Care to share some of your ideas? One day, Steem will become mainsteem … oops, another one!

Translation and how we tackle it affects the future scenario of steeemit

It is envisaged at the moment that a huge influx of Chinese-using users to Steemit is inevitable. Language will become an urgent issue to deal with for the development of this community (of course I acknowledge the fact that a lot of non-English languages have been active here and a lot more will come as well). What I think of right now is that I came across many high quality English posts from time to time but if there is no translation (into Chinese), it is expected that a big portion of the future Chinese users won’t be able to read or digest them to a certain degree, which is a great pity and hinders communication and sharing among different groups of people. There have been some translators’ efforts like @benjojo ‘s Translation Services List. But the problem is even if someone does the translation job, it gives rise to the problem of double rewarding (despite that fact that translation should also be rewarded accordingly) or potential plagiarism. It may be partly resolved by the private negotiation between the author and the translator on authorization and profit sharing. But I don’t think that’s a permanent or systematic way to solve this issue. So far I can only raise the question, but no proper solution is on my mind – maybe that’s what @dan and @ned should consider next.

看來遲早大量中文使用者即將快速湧入Steemit，語言成為此社群一個需要思考的問題。現在想到的是，我常常看到許多高品質的英文文章，但如果沒有翻譯，可能中文社群很多人會無法看到或是吸收不良，這是很可惜的(未來若是中文興起，反之亦然)。如果有人投身翻譯，在這會碰到授權/剽竊或是重複獎賞的問題(當然翻譯工作本身是值得獎賞的)，雖然某種程度可以透過翻譯者與作者的授權與分享利潤協議來解決，似乎不能作為一種妥善的解方。拋個問題，沒有答案，或許是管理者未來該思考的。

Recent article about VCR... Who will be said goodbye to soon?

Came across an article by Tekla S. Perry on IEEE-Spectrum - "Goodbye, VCR, You Served Us Well". It pays tribute to VCR’s 60 years service to mankind (1956-2016). Considering that DVD was invented in 1995, I guess it won’t survive longer than even half that of VCR.

So, as #blockchain comes along, who will be said goodbye to? Maybe we can go further and ask when will blockchain be said goodbye to?
