Hey, what’s up fellow Steemians! What you see in my photos here are part of the Royal Palace of Cambodia in its capital city Phnom Penh. The head image is my entry to the Qurator Photo Friday competition.

It’s the moment before a tropical shower when the changing sky and clouds casted a dramatic backdrop for these buildings. The girl in the picture was cycling hard to escape the coming storm, and the heavy rain started to pour when I walked fast till a restaurant by the square.

The fried chicken restaurant franchise is called Bonchon Chicken. They are commonly seen in Southeast Asia and the USA, but there’s only 1 store in its birthplace of South Korea. So I ordered a coffee and a Bibimbap while waiting for the rain to stop. I’m not sure if the meal was genuinely Korean, but it tasted great and this place offered a nice view point for the palace and the square.

About 2 hours later, the downpour stopped, and locals went on picnicing. This square and the river side seemed to be a popular place for tourists as well as the locals to relax.

The whole complex covers an extensive area of 174,870 square metres. Its throne hall, defensive wall, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, stupas and towering spires are all typical elements of Khmer architecture with a slight French touch.

In the mid-19th century, the construction of the palace started after the royal capital was relocated here from Oudong. The site was chosen at the Western bank of the cross division of the two important rivers - Mekong River and Tonle Sap River.

The Kings of Cambodia have lived in the palace since it was built except for the period of the Khmer Rouge.
