Here are my 3 shots of white flowers. The tulips in the first picture were captured in Keukenhof. Keukenhof is known as the largest flower garden in the world, and it’s situated in Lisse, a town south of Haarlem, between Amsterdam and The Hague in Netherlands.

There are over 3000 varieties of tulips, with many different colors too. White tulips are popular as wedding bouquets. They are in the range from pure white to a more creamy white.

Tulips are widely cultivated in the Netherlands, and in the spring, tulip festivals abound throughout the country. Besides Keukenhof, you can find a huge amount of tulips in places like Kop van Noord-Holland, Noordoostpolder, and Aalsmeer.

The Dutch people loved bringing tulips to new countries when they settled down abroad, for example, in New York, there is also a tulip festival. Originally named New Amsterdam, there is a strong connection here to Dutch roots.

And in this post, I’d love to share with you the famous story of Tulip Mania in history:

The Story of Tulip Mania

Although the Netherlands is known for tulips, these flowers were not originally from there. They were imported from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Later in 1592, a French pioneering botanist Carolus Clusius wrote the first major book on tulips, which made this flower so popular that his garden was raided, and people kept stealing the bulbs.

Tulips became more and more popular as the Dutch Golden Age grew. It’s a common subject in paintings and festivals at that time. In the mid-seventeenth century, as a result of buying up bulbs, the tulips were getting so expensive that they were used as money until the market crashed. They even created the first economic bubble in history, known as “Tulip Mania”.

Today, “Tulip Mania” is often used to refer to a large economic bubble when the asset price deviates from the intrinsic value. Sounds familiar? Yep, some people compare the #cryptocurrency mania or #bitcoin craze to “Tulip Mania”. Of course there is also voice against this view. I’m not an expert on this, but time will tell.

Since my post is inspired by the White is White Contest by @dmcamera, and the “A City A Story” Photo Contest by @aaronli, I will stick to only white flowers here. In my future post about travel tips to this garden, I’m going to include more pictures from Keukenhof. All photos by me with my old friend Canon Kiss X3 and lens EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Enjoy these white beauties! =)
