Here’s a scene I captured in a shop in Valparaíso, a charming colorful city on Chile’s coast. I entered this crafts shop and saw a young man teaching an elderly man how to use the laptop. Perhaps the young man was the owner and this apprentice was his grandpa. :)

It’s lovely to see the excited student trying out the new technology that he might never heard of in his young age, surrounded by the flowery decorations, modern stickers and cute trinkets. I believe we both had fun.

It’s my second entry for @ntopaz’s Opposing Beauty Photography Contest and for People Photography by @worldcapture. The original photo as below:

Val.JPG

#205 SteemitBoard Carnival Challenge 🎉🎊 Follow Me to Binche Carnival (40+ photos) |

Greetings everyone! In this post I’m showing you the famous carnival in Binche, an old town in the Wallonia part of Belgium.

Binche carnival is an annual festival celebrating Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) during the three days before Lent. Since today is Ash Wednesday, this year’s celebrations just took place the past 3 days. So I’m very excited to share my festive experience with you! :D I only visited Binche on one of the three days a few years ago, and it was a lot of fun, despite the cold and wet weather.

This tradition dates back to around the 14th century and has been recognized as UNESCO heritage. During the carnival each year, over a thousand local males and children dress up as several figures to perform in medieval parade.

First, I saw some kids marching through the streets. The main figures in the proceedings are called Gilles. They wear clown-like costumes with bells, and their unique clogs don’t look so easy to walk with. Some of them wear large hats adorned with fluffy ostrich plumes.

It’s said that local men see being a Gille at the carnival as a kind of honor. It’s cool that the residents here try to preserve this old tradition generation after generation. Actually, since I was a night owl, I missed the early morning parade of the carnival’s final day, when Gilles in wax masks (in the last photo) danced to drum beat and warded off evil spirits with sticks.

Apparently locals have some advantages there - harvesting oranges easily with all kinds of nets. ;) But they also have to fence their windows, as there were properties damaged in the past by the orange bullets.

#204 My Entries for B&W Photo Contest ~ Reflections in Water | 倒影

Reflections of Clouds and Hills | Kaprun, Austria

##

##
Hello everyone! Today I’m sharing some photos of reflections in water. The monochrome ones also serve as my entries for the B&W Photo Contest hosted by @daveks.

##
The first entry is from the Austrian Alps in the beautiful region of Tyrol. I’ve loved this area - you can enjoy breathtaking views almost everywhere after some easy hikes, and it’s normally less crowded and expensive than in similar places of Swiss or French Alps. I took these 2 photos by the lake of Klammsee in the Kaprun ski area. The water of these alpine lakes is usually very clear, so reflections are common sights here. :)

Reflections of Boat Lifts and Trees | Wallonia, Belgium

##

##
This is an Ascenseur (hydraulic boat lift) located on the Ancien Canal Du Centre near La Louvière of Belgium. 4 lifts with 15+ meters rise were built in the late 19th and early 20th century, and this place has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The lifts were used to overcome the difference of the water level (a rise by 66.2 meters) along the canal. You can see all the 4 boat lifts here if interested.

This region used to be an important industrial belt in the country, but nowadays commercial traffic bypasses these old lifts and is handled by the huge Strépy-Thieu boat lift, which was the highest in the world upon completion, with a rise of 73 meters.

I arrived here at sunset and got to see this engineering marvel standing quietly with his reflection in the canal. That sense of past glory! ;)

##
I shot this photo in the windmill village of Kinderdijk, close to Rotterdam. This place is best known for its 19 iconic windmills built in the first half of 18th century.

I arrived in the afternoon and wandered around till the golden hour. By that time everything was closed and most visitors left, so the windmills and plants were bathing peacefully in warm rays by the waterway. I used to post photos from the same village but from different angles.

So that’s it for my reflection shots. Which is your favorite one? Tell me in the comments please. =)

#203 Opposing Beauty (1) |

ntopaz-image-0

##
Greetings everyone! The new theme of @ntopaz’s photography contest is Opposing Beauty. When I see this topic, the first photo that pops up in my mind is this one I took in Bolivia. I used it as background in my Cross-culture Challenge cover image, but haven’t posted it in any photography content yet. I love this fun theme and would submit more photos in the coming days. :)

I was walking on a street in La Paz when I came across this scene. I found it interesting, layered with social commentary. Now I don’t feel like analyzing all the elements in this image like in my art criticism class. ;) They say a picture is worth a thousand words. How do you interprete this photo? Please tell me in the comments.

#202 A Peruvian Girl | 街拍人像 - Peoplephotography by worldcapture week #19

p.jpg

How are you doing my Steem friends? Here’s my entry for the Peoplephotography by @worldcapture week #19 and Qurator’s Photo Friday competition. Check out these contests and join the fun! =)

I captured this photo near Pisac in the Sacred Valley of Peru. I was wandering around and was attracted by this cheerful girl who was walking down the stairs.

The villages in this region are known for their locally made textiles. I did a post about one textile market in another village some days ago. Check it out if interested.

Didn’t she look pretty in these traditional outfits? I showed her the picture and we were both happy about it. :)

I also made a black & white one like what is popular in street photography, but I prefer the first one that shows her colorful clothing. What do you think? Tell me in the commnets please!

#201 STEEM Food Tours #50 |

##
Hey, this is my dinner tonight in an Asian restaurant called Kyoto Sushi: fried rice with scampi and vegetables, and a cup of mint tea. It’s also my entry to join the 50th edition of the @STEEMFoodTours challenge by @jeffjagoe. Check it out and join the fun if you are a foodie too! :)

As the restaurant’s name suggests, it’s focusing on different types of sushi. But since it’s a raining and chilly night here in Belgium, I didn’t feel like eating cold sushi. Instead, I ordered a plate of stir-fried rice and a cup of heart-warming tea. The food here is not top-notch, but pretty tasty. The dishes they serve are kind of Asian food fusion, like many other Asian eateries in Western countries, to cater to both locals as well as eaters from other countries.

The staff is very friendly and their service is fast. But their square tables are a bit too tiny for all the food and drinks, especially when it’s a huge portion. I’m not a big fan of their decor - too much red everywhere which makes me feel dizzy, haha.

The mint tea(water) is fresh and not so sweet as the traditional Moroccan mint tea I tried, because there’s no sugar in it but aside. The picture is also my entry to the new challenge - “Tea Time” in CN community, hosted by @aellly and @xiaoshancun.
