#134 Tribe Women at a Market My entry for the 7 DAYS 🖼 PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST! 🖼 by @flamingirl

What’s up fellow Steemians! Here is my last entry for the 7 DAYS PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST by @flamingirl. I resteemed her contest post earlier, check it out and join the photo fun! =)

I clicked this shot at a local market in the south of Ethiopia. I visited this interesting market near the village Turmi, and encountered this woman from Hamar/Hamer tribe, a semi-nomadic, pastoral community best known for their distinctive style and bull-leaping ceremony. They have elaborately rolled hair in red ochre and beef tallow, and are wearing beautiful beaded necklaces and metal bracelets. It’s said that they are fond of the accessories made of shells, which they trade at these markets brought over from Kenya.

##
To prove this is my photo work as required by the hostess, here’s another photo of the same lady:

IMG_2691.JPG

##
And a picture I took of other 2 girls at the market:

##
Here’s another Hamar woman I posted before, but in front of her home, not from the same market. The marital collar on her neck indicates that she is the first wife, just like the woman on the left from the photo above. And you can see from the head image - that woman is not a first wife without the special collar. I know, it sounds a bit crazy right? Like in many tribes, the men here can marry multiple women, as long as they have enough cows to pay the bride price.

What’s up fellow Steemians! Here is my entry for the 7 DAYS PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST by @flamingirl. I resteemed her contest post earlier, check it out and join the photo fun! =)

I shot the photo on a street in La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) district, in the capital city of Cuba. That afternoon, I walked past a bakery, and the people inside waved hello to me. So I stopped at their window to have a chat with them in my crappy Spanish. Despite the economic condition in Cuba, they are pretty happy and carefree. We managed to talk a bit and laughed a lot.

The rationing system of food distribution in Cuba reminds me of the same situation in the Communist China decades ago. I heard the stories from my parents and grandparents. Like the Cubans, Chinese people at that time had to take a coupon booklet to a ration shop, to get their family minimums for supplies like rice, oil, salt, sugar… and the frequency of basic goods is also defined by the government.

Before I left, they asked me to take a photo for them. Enjoy their contagious smiles! =)

##
To show you their working environment, also to prove this is my photo work as required by the hostess, here’s another photo of the same lady:

As I said in a previous post about Some SMILE Portraits in My Travels :

A smile costs nothing, but gives much. Pretty often we underestimate the power of a smile, the gorgeous curve that sets everything straight. Have you ever had the experience that someone’s lovely smile just brightens your day? It happened to me a lot in daily life and during my travels.

And a flashback of a scene I captured on another street in Old Havana, a lively and hectic district full of local charm. The doors of local homes are usually wide open, and portrait of Fidel Castro or Che Guevara is a common sight on the wall of many homes. The locals seem to enjoy sitting outside, chatting or playing music.

##

I shot the photo in Omo Valley in the south of Ethiopia. This tribe is close to Omorate by the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. The man in my photo was the only male adult I found there, among all the women, kids, huts and herds. Looking at his headpiece, perhaps he is the tribal chief. People in this tribe decorate their bodies with elaborate accessories made mostly of beads and metals. They also like dressing in bright-colored fabrics, and some of them paint parts of their bodies.

To show you his living environment, also to prove this is my photo work as required by the hostess, here are 2 more photos of the same man:

#130 What's it like to watch sunrise at Angkor Wat? 🇰🇭

SunriseAngkor (7).jpg.jpg)

##
What’s up my Steemit friends! I invite you to follow me today to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It’s inspired by A City a Story photo contest hosted by @aaronli.

As a national symbol of Cambodia, 🇰🇭 Angkor Wat is the country’s prime attraction that draws a large number of visitors all year round. And watching sunrise over the towers is a must when visiting this place.

This temple complex is the largest religious monument in the world, built by a Khmer King as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu in the early 12th century, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the same century.

##

SunriseAngkor (3).JPG.JPG)

##
We got up at 4am in Siem Reap that day and arrived at the Angkor Wat site by e-bike (faster and cooler than the tuk tuk) at around 5:10am, when it’s already packed with visitors.

After walking through the causeway, the waiting game started by the reflection pond in front of the main temple. There were people waiting in different spots, and I picked this spot with less heads in front.

##

Still dark when we arrived:

##
This is what I mean by “less heads in front”:

##
Because the crowds is like this:
SunriseAngkor (5).jpg.jpg)

##
All the crowds were waiting for that exciting moment in silence. The sun finally appeared over the horizon at 6:10am, shining through the trees and spangling the water surface. The flickering ripples in the pond started to dance with the golden sun rays… then the yellow sphere quickly glided up the trees, in a few minutes, the whole sky was lit up. ☀️

##

SunriseAngkor (2).JPG.JPG)

SunriseAngkor (8).jpg.jpg)

##
Pretty stunning right? As a night person, I can’t get up early, so I take much more sunset shots than sunrise ones. But I once read that at sunset the sky is full of pollutants and wind-borne particles, while more colors can be perceived at dawn than at dusk. What do you think of this?

After the sunrise, we went on to visit the temples nearby, in the extreme heat and humidity:

SunriseAngkor (9).jpg.jpg)

SunriseAngkor (4).jpg.jpg)

SunriseAngkor (6).jpg.jpg)

Since my topic today is about the sunrise, I’m not going to extend too much on the temples, only a few tips first:

  • You can visit Angkor Wat as well as other religious sites such as Angkor Thom, Bayon, Preah Khan, Banteay Srei, Pre Rup, Ta Prohm, Terrace of the Elephants…, in an extensive jungle area a bit north of Siem Reap, a base for exploring those amazing ancient temples and surrounds.

  • 7-day pass is a good choice since there’s quite some distance between certain sites, and there’s so much to see at each site. If you are short of time, you can also choose the 3-day pass.

  • Remember to bring sunscreen and cool clothes for the heat, and cover your shoulders and knees as required by the religious culture.

##

Hi fellow Steemians, this is my first entry for the Steemit Portrait Photography Contest Week 45 themed Sepia Toned Portraits.

I shot this photo in Taormina on the island of Sicily, Italy. After visiting the ancient amphitheater on the hilltop that day, I strolled to a port. These two kids were having fun in front of a shed by the water. They might be sister and brother from a family nearby. The girl was cutting some green leaves, perhaps for their “grand meal” of the day, and the little boy was preparing a pot to “cook”. :) The golden sun rays were shining on the girl’s hair, and the boy’s smiling face was lit - a lovely scene I just couldn’t help capturing with my camera. =)

To prove this is my photo work as required by the hostess, here’s the same photo in colors and another photo of the two children:
