Each year, millions of visitors flock to the jungle of Cambodia to visit this Ta Prohm Temple, and marvel at the battle between nature and architecture. Here, nature takes over.

The silk-cotton and strangler fig trees have been growing over and through the stone structures. These untamed trees are telling visitors the stories of LIFE. Their clutches are seeking any slight chance of LIFE, and at the same time, they are devouring the LIFE of some ancient buildings.

ABF7DECC-44DC-4777-A686-6FDD31E9177D.jpeg

Yes it is a very touristic place, just like Machu Picchu and the Great Wall, small chance that you can escape the large crowds, and this reclamation of the jungle has been photographed millions of times. Still, it is one of the most atmospheric and mesmerizing temples I visited, and I added another 20 shots to the millions’ count. ;)

E1DD0A3E-7E08-444E-9270-42746CB5E70F.jpeg

I didn’t feel the Indiana Jones or the Tomb Raider vibe here, like many said. I just got lost a dozen times wandering through the maze, because of the distraction of the LIFE show and my legendary sense of directions.

Ta Prohm was built as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It is close to the even more famous Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. You can visit it as part of the small circuit of the Angkor complex. Its entrance is reachable by tuk tuk, or by a scooter/motorcycle like we did.

That’s it for today’s tale of life. Hope you enjoyed it like I did! Have you been to Ta Prohm temple? How did you feel there? Tell me what you think in the comments below. Until next time! =)

Here are my 3 shots of white flowers. The tulips in the first picture were captured in Keukenhof. Keukenhof is known as the largest flower garden in the world, and it’s situated in Lisse, a town south of Haarlem, between Amsterdam and The Hague in Netherlands.

There are over 3000 varieties of tulips, with many different colors too. White tulips are popular as wedding bouquets. They are in the range from pure white to a more creamy white.

Tulips are widely cultivated in the Netherlands, and in the spring, tulip festivals abound throughout the country. Besides Keukenhof, you can find a huge amount of tulips in places like Kop van Noord-Holland, Noordoostpolder, and Aalsmeer.

The Dutch people loved bringing tulips to new countries when they settled down abroad, for example, in New York, there is also a tulip festival. Originally named New Amsterdam, there is a strong connection here to Dutch roots.

And in this post, I’d love to share with you the famous story of Tulip Mania in history:

The Story of Tulip Mania

Although the Netherlands is known for tulips, these flowers were not originally from there. They were imported from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Later in 1592, a French pioneering botanist Carolus Clusius wrote the first major book on tulips, which made this flower so popular that his garden was raided, and people kept stealing the bulbs.

Tulips became more and more popular as the Dutch Golden Age grew. It’s a common subject in paintings and festivals at that time. In the mid-seventeenth century, as a result of buying up bulbs, the tulips were getting so expensive that they were used as money until the market crashed. They even created the first economic bubble in history, known as “Tulip Mania”.

Today, “Tulip Mania” is often used to refer to a large economic bubble when the asset price deviates from the intrinsic value. Sounds familiar? Yep, some people compare the #cryptocurrency mania or #bitcoin craze to “Tulip Mania”. Of course there is also voice against this view. I’m not an expert on this, but time will tell.

Since my post is inspired by the White is White Contest by @dmcamera, and the “A City A Story” Photo Contest by @aaronli, I will stick to only white flowers here. In my future post about travel tips to this garden, I’m going to include more pictures from Keukenhof. All photos by me with my old friend Canon Kiss X3 and lens EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Enjoy these white beauties! =)

Which photo or flowers do you like the most? Have you heard about the story of “Tulip Mania”? Feel free to share your comments below! Until next time. :D

Zodiac Animal Lantern Workshop

##
Hey Steemit friends, in my last post about Chinese New Year, I talked about the traditional lunar calendar. As I promised, in this post, I’m talking on about another topic - Zodiac Animals.

Earlier on I realized 2018 is a year of Dog, as I noticed some Chinese app icons on my phone screen turned to dog-themed ones. So why is 2018 a Dog Year? Last weekend, I went to a Chinese New Year celebration in Caboolture by the Moreton Bay(Moreton Bay bugs anyone? ;p), north of Brisbane. There I happened to see a workshop of making zodiac animal lanterns. So I’m explaining this Chinese tradition with the story of the workshop.

B55D22D3-C3C2-4DD2-BB20-A1C2A961447B.jpeg

You probably know that 12 zodiac animals are used to date a repeating cycle of 12 years in China. From the photo of Zodiac Wheel above that I took at the workshop, you can see the 12 animals and the birth years they represent. In order, the 12 animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Their order is decided by Chinese Yin and Yang Theory and perceived attributes, each with its associated Earthly Branch. The Dog is the eleventh on the list. You can find 2018 in the Dog section on the Zodiac Wheel. Since 12 is a cycle, the next Dog year will be 2030, and the following year 2019 will be the Year of the Pig.

In the workshop, kids are taught to look for their animal signs from the Zodiac Wheel according to their birth years. And they learn to write the Chinese character of that animal onto the lantern. Here are the instructions of making the Chinese New Year lanterns:

They are having fun writing Chinese and making the lanterns:
5CF530D7-74B5-4A89-BA67-FE19C6234D17.jpeg

This workshop seems to be a great way to help these Australian children understand a bit about the zodiac animals in Chinese culture, and they learn it in a fun creative way by DIY their own lanterns. What do you think of this Zodiac Animal Lantern Workshop?

Chinese Zodiac Culture

There are many legends related to Chinese zodiac and the versions are varied in different regions. According to one Chinese mythology, an emperor hosted a race to select the first 12 animals that cross the river to represent the years. Just as an ox was about to win the race, a rat went ahead by leaping on his head and on to the bank. And the slow pig was the last on the list.

You may wonder why the common domestic animal cat is absent from the Zodiac list. Most historians agree that this animal list was formed before cats were introduced to China from India with Buddhism. But the cat has made it into Vietnamese zodiac cycle, so not too bad for him/her. ;)

In Madarin, the animal zodiac is called ‘shengxiao’, which literally means ‘born resembling’. Traditionally, people born in a certain year are said to have the attributes of the symbol animal. For instance, people who were born in the Dog year are said to be friendly and faithful, on the other side, they can be indecisive and pessimistic.

Besides the 12 years, the 12 zodiac animals are also associated with hours of a day in Chinese culture. Ancient Chinese divided a day into twelve periods, each 2-hour period is represented by an animal to tell the time. It starts from Rat period which is 11pm to 1am, and ends with Pig period which is 9pm to 11pm.

In ancient Chinese culture, and still in some rural regions in contemporary China, the Zodiac signs play an integral part in social life. The animal signs, together with other elements, such as palmistry, face characteristics, the five nature elements, birth month, day, and hour, can be used to tell one’s fortune, one’s compatibility with the other half in a relationship or marriage, one’s career fit, etc..

It’s like the fortune telling using the system of Western Astrology, you choose to believe it or not. For me, the Chinese animal zodiac or the Western astrological sign is just a kind of interesting fun tradition. Anyway, how could people be the same just being born in the same year or same month with some similar elements? But I don’t mind it when people tell me something like ‘ Your birth animal is cool’ , or ‘Aquarius kicks ass.’ ;)

What about you? Do you believe in these Zodiac signs? Tell me what you think in the comments below! Until next time! =)

#48 By the Scheldt River of Antwerp(1) ε€±ζœ›ηš„ε°ε₯³ε©ο½œζœˆζ—¦θ―„ ζ‘„ε½±

I used to live very close to Antwerp in Belgium, so I visited this city frequently and knew it pretty well. One summer, my mom came to visit me, and I brought her to the Scheldt River in Antwerp for some fresh breeze from the sea. When we were strolling along the river, there was a little girl in front of us trying to look into a telescope’s viewfinder for the view in distance, but somehow it’s not working after she put in a coin. I captured her disappointed face at that moment. And I never knew that one day on Steemit, there would be a photography contest themed DISAPPOINTMENT ;), so I believe my photos below are a perfect match for this theme. :D

Antwerp is a gem that I’d love to talk about a bit more. =) Lonely Planet calls this city “the country’s capital of cool”, “a powerful magnet for everyone from fashion moguls and club queens to art lovers and diamond dealers”(I hope this quote won’t get the cheetah bot here ;p ) . I once wrote a post about the beautiful Groenplaats in this city. Check it out if interested.

And in my coming post I will focus on a few cool sights along the Scheldt River. I actually already wrote a draft about some places to see, then I quickly realize that this post is getting too long and is overshadowing this main topic of “disappointed girl”, so I’m cutting it here and will continue in my next post.

What do you think of these shots? Have you been to Antwerp or Belgium? Feel free to share your comments below. Stay tuned and see you soon! =)

What’s up Steemit friends! Today I’m sharing with you 4 monochrome photos shot in Europe and South America, and the stories behind them. I’m inspired by the B&W Photo Contest hosted by @daveks, and the Animal Shadow contest by @melinda010100. I appreciate their efforts in building an active photography community on #Steemit. 👍

Eduardo Avaroa, Bolivia

This picture was taken at sunrise at a hot spring in Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve of Andean Fauna, near Laguna Colorada in Bolivia, not far from the borders of Chile and Argentina.

It’s heart (and body of course :D) warming to soak in a hot thermal bath in the freezing morning. And I was mesmerized by the shadows and the steam that were dancing in the first glow in the tranquil wildness:

File Feb 17, 01 34 49.jpeg

Pula Arena, Croatia

The amphitheater below is not the Colosseum in Rome, but the Pula Arena of Croatia. This arena is one of the six largest surviving Roman amphitheaters in the world, and is among the best preserved few. Pula is a pretty port city known for its multitude of ancient Roman buildings.

I visited the inside in the late afternoon and waited till at night when the amphitheater was closed, so there was only me there by the fence. Beautiful serenity. The Arena was lit then by warm yellow lights in peace and quiet. You can see my lonely shadow as well as the shadows of the fence and the stone structures:
File Feb 17, 01 04 05.jpeg

File Feb 17, 01 23 48.jpeg

Museum Honestino Guimarães, Brazil

This retrofuturistic building below is the National Museum of the Republic in Brasília, also known as Museum Honestino Guimarães. It is designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer, who is the chief designer of the city’s modern architectures. Both the building and the skateboarder cast shadows which form an interesting contrast between the different shapes and shades.

If you are interested in more photos of this architecture, check out my post - Niemeyer’s Artwork Through My Lens (1) 🇧🇷

Kotor, Montenegro

##
This last photo of a cute kitten is my entry for the contest hosted by @melinda010100 themed Animal Shadow.

I captured this one afternoon when I was strolling a street in Kotor of Montenegro. Kotor is a beautiful coastal town surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period.

Used to be a Mediterranean port, Kotor is also known for its large amount of cats all over the streets. There’s even a Cats Museum dedicated for these little creatures. If you love cats, don’t miss the chance to check out this museum when you visit Kotor!

So that’s it for today’s stories of shadows. Hope you like them! Have you been to any of these places? Which photo is your favorite? Tell me what you think in the comments below! Until next time. =)

#46 Photo Hunt Contest #1 ~ Peacock πŸ“· εŠ¨η‰©ζ‘„ε½± ο½œζœˆζ—¦θ―„

Hello fellow Steemians, today I’d like to share a group of peacock photos I shot in Pueblito Los Dominicos, Santiago de Chile. Los Dominicos is a village of shops made of mud and straw. Renovated from an old barn and some stables, this place is for artisans and artists to create and sell their handcrafts and artworks to the public.

I know, it sounds totally irrelevant to this peacock, right?😜 But I captured its images in this village, and it is truly an interesting place for arts and crafts lovers, so I am going to blog about this village in my future post. =)

Renowned for their gorgeous plumage, peacocks are popular in many countries especially in Asia. People love to watch their fan-like crest of the beautiful feathers. Three distinct species of peafowl(male ones) are found - the blue Indian peafowl originally of the Indian subcontinent; the green peafowl of Southeast Asia; and the Congo peafowl which is an African species.

The blue Indian peafowl is seen as one of the national symbols in India. Their images can be commonly found in architectures and utensils in the country. In some ethnic groups in Southwest China, peacock is also seen as a ‘sacred bird’, that is adored by the local people and is imitated in their traditional dances.
