#308 Colca Canyon πŸ” | ζ·±θ°·ι£Žζ™―

##
Colca Canyon is one of the most impressive places that I visited in Peru. It is located in the southern part of the country, and is less visited than some other better known star sights.

The canyon here is claimed to be the deepest one in the world, almost twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the US. When I was hiking in the canyon, the stunning views and the high elevation kept taking my breath away.

The majestic high mountains and snow-capped volcanoes were shrouded in mist; the crystal clear creek were flowing at the bottom of the deep canyons; and the condors were soaring above my head.

Deep in the mountains, the Inca traditions here are little altered. The locals still cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces built into the slopes.

This is my entry for Qurator’s Photo Friday competition. Feel free to join the fun! :)

#307 Sparkling Sampler | 气泑酒

One weekend I visited Sonoma Valley with my friends from San Francisco. This beautiful region in northern California is renowned for its winemaking. We toured around a winery there and tried different types of sparkling wine and tapas. Wonderful drinks and snacks, and great time accompanied by friends. The photo here is my entry for @ntopaz’s Still Life Bodegon contest by @acostaeladio. What do you think of it? Looking tempting to you? :)

##
The definition of Bodegón from their page:

Bodegon, a still life photograph, is an artistic composition of several inanimate objects. Still life photographs can be represented with immobile natural materials, such as flowers, seeds, fruits and shells. Or use everyday elements made by man, such as kitchen utensils, work tools or ornaments, which is creating a boom among photographers. Crayons, pencils, paints and 3D objects can be used to create good artistic drawings manually. The design software is also used as an artistic tool to create a good still life.

##

Mention the model of the camera or technique for the manual production or design process (include the step-by-step process).

##
So I arranged the wine sampler and the tapas plates on the table and shot this photo from above. Here’s the info of my camera and settings:

#306 Peruvian Ceviche πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ͺ πŸ˜‹ | η§˜ι²ε›½θœ

The heat wave here makes me crave for the tasty cold dish ceviche/cebiche. Originated in Peru, this treat has become popular across the Americas, and it’s not difficult to find it in big cities in other parts of the world.

Here I’m sharing a photo of ceviche I had in Arequiba of Peru. I ate the dish almost every week when living in Chile and traveling through Peru, and it’s always an enjoyable experience. :) I’d love to share much much more delicious Peruvian food in future when I find time to go through my pictures.

Ceviche is typically made from raw fish cured in lime or lemon juice, and spiced with chili peppers and other seasonings like onions, cilantro and salt. And in Peru, most ceviche dishes I tried were accompanied by side dishes, such as sweet potato, toasted corns, plantain chips and lettuce. As you can see from my photo, these colorful elements look very pleasant and help open up appetite.

The tangy sour flavor goes so well with the cold fresh fish, plus its healthy dose, it’s such a delight to enjoy in summer time!

Have you also tried ceviche before? Do you like it?

#305 Iguanas πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ | 美洲鬣θœ₯

If you have been to the tropical areas of Latin America, you might have seen this genus of lizard in the wild. I spotted this iguana at the coast on the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and shot these pictures.

I immediately thought of this fellow when I saw @phortun’s Reptile photo contest. Since he’s based in Riviera Maya and I remember seeing his photos of iguanas. These lizards were quite common sights when I was visiting that region. Does this one look familiar @phortun? ;)

##

##
The genus includes 2 species: the green iguana which is a popular pet and the endangered Lesser Antillean iguana. Green iguanas are native to Central and South America, and their meat is a delicacy on some locals’ dining tables.

While in Puerto Rico where I lived, they pose a threat to farmers by eating a large amount of their crops. Without any predators on the island, they become an invasive species.

These big reptiles boast keen vision which enables them to locate food in long distance and to communicate with other members.

And here’s the closeup of another iguana. I saw it being kept as a pet on the island of Bali in Indonesia:

#304 Whirling Up | ε›žζ—‹θˆž

nfbzzuaj81.jpg

##
Here’s a dancing figurine of the Whirling Dervishes, a piece of artwork I found on a street of Istanbul. I watched the dance that day and was impressed by its unique spiritual atmosphere.

The mysterious Whirling Dervishes are a part of the Sufism of Islam. They believe that by performing the Sema dance, dancers can abandon their personal desires and unify with God to achieve the love and wisdom.

As a part of the religious ceremony “Sema”, this whirling dance is originated in the 13th century in Konya of Turkey, and you can find the performance and relevant souveniors in many parts of the country.

I found the dancing quite mesmerising. The Dervishes based their whirling on the left foot, while the right foot gave impetus to the rotation in 360-degree steps. Meanwhile, they opened their arms towards the sky and the earth, symbolizing God’s beneficence from heaven and his love to people.

In my photo here, you can see the dancer’s wearing a tall, conical felt hat (signifying the tombstones of their egos) and a white robe (symbolizing the shrouds of their egos). When I saw this hanging statuette, I felt its white costume go well with the dark background, and the beautiful shape and lines make a good monochrome picture, so I shot it in black and white. It’s my entry to @derangedvisions’ Photography Contest - Black and White. I like his explanation, which might be inspiring for you too:

What is black and white photography? It is more than just desaturating your image and removing all of the color from it. True black and white photography removes all of the distractions that can come with color and reveals the true essence and emotion of a photograph.

##
When I shoot, I try and envision what I want the final image to look like, and the type of feel that I want it to have. Doing so makes me conscious of my lens selection, aperture, shutter speed, angles, back drop, and then I have to think ahead to how the photo is going to be edited as well, so I can make sure that I am telling the story through the lens in the first place when I capture the photo so that it ends up the way I want it to when I am done with the final edits.

I saw these famous lines by Mark Twain printed on a wall of a travel agency in the famous travel destination in Croatia - Dubrovnik.

I like the design in this corner, and a fun fact: I just arrived there by hitchhiking from Montenegro. I missed the last connecting bus that day since the schedule changed when summer just finished. So I didn’t catch the trade winds in my sails, but caught a kind truck driver who was willing to give me a lift, after standing 3 hours in the scorching sun with a sign. It was a fun experience.

Actually, why do I ramble so much? Trying to say that the agency did a good job in marketing? Trying to convey some sort of silly profound message about life? Or trying to argue this single-picture post is not “low effort” because it’s a photo that I captured after going through lots of hardships?

I have no idea. Feel free to call it shitpost if you must.
