As a young man, Try to Avoid the Temptation of Plagiarism (영문판)

Hello everyone? I am Salmon who is currently working in a Korean Community called ‘kr’ Recently, many users of the world have been visiting kr community. However, you may be experiencing difficulties to understand because most of content are written in Korean.

Of course, there are some who try to understand the contents using electronic translation service, but it obviously has limitation. Even though I am able to write in English, but it would be better and helpful to introduce perfect contents with the help of a professional translator in order to share truthful emotion with you. Now and then, I would love to translate and introduce not only my own contents but also good stories by other users.

Today let me introduce to you a piece of writing I have written. As you may have had similar experiences, there was a big issue about plagiarism in kr community. I’d like to share with you my views on this

여러분 안녕하십니까? 저는 한국 커뮤니티 ‘kr’에서 활동하고 있는 ‘연어(salmon)’입니다. 최근에 세계의 많은 유저(user)분들이 kr 커뮤니티를 방문하고 있습니다. 하지만 대부분의 글들이 한국어로만 쓰여 있어 여러분들이 그 내용을 이해하기에는 어려운 점이 많습니다.

물론 번역기를 활용하여 내용을 이해해 보려고 노력하는 분들도 있습니다. 하지만 번역기만으로는 분명 한계가 있습니다. 저 역시 영어로 글을 쓸 줄 알지만, 기왕이면 전문 번역가의 도움을 얻어 완벽하게 번역된 내용들을 소개해 드리는 것이 여러분과 감동을 공유하는데 더 도움이 될 것이라고 생각했습니다. 앞으로 틈틈이 제 글은 물론 한국 유저분들이 쓴 좋은 컨텐츠들을 번역하여 소개해 볼까 합니다. 여러분의 많은 성원을 부탁드립니다.

오늘은 제가 썼던 글 한 편을 소개해 볼까 합니다. 여러분도 비슷한 경험을 하셨겠지만, 최근에 한국 kr 커뮤니티에서는 표절에 대한 큰 이슈가 있었습니다. 이에 대한 저의 의견을 여러분과 함께 나누고 싶습니다.

[As a young man, try to avoid the temptation of plagiarism]

It’s Salmon. It seems like you just put down your sorry for a while. However, you may have to put down your conscience after the lapse of time. You have to develop your own defenses to protect yourself later to immunize the feeling of guilt. The plagiarism is just like that. have you ever know that you have to encounter huge amount of responsibility when you come out to real life after you just simply say ‘I didn’t’t know’?

Everyone can plagiarize, and most people try to avoid a debate about if it’s right or wrong caused by plagiarism. However, the temptation of plagiarism is too sweet to deny. That is why I am certain that there must be someone caught by this temptation. But it is a social problem if the young easily becomes a prey to such temptation, and we better bring this issue upfront to find a solution.

Many people say that it is worthy of saving time and trying something hard while they are young, but I don’t agree to that. Because I think fancifying or goofing around could be very important part of the early life. However, I think it’s imperative that you avoid yourself from dragging yourself in the wrong direction. That is the responsibility of the young. If you don’t have strong intention of resistance, you trade your youth with much less value.

Now, we go back to plagiarism. I often consider ‘plagiarism’ as ‘value added’. There is a tax called ‘VAT’ and it is created to charge more taxes by many governments but it’s worth brooding the concept over. If you produce the value through investment or action or you enrich the existing value then you would be exempted from tax but you no longer desire to appreciate and consume the value created previously without enriching, you pay for the values you have accrued. That is perhaps the concept of VAT. It is not about enjoying the value of the past, it’s about the paying for the values that have happened before when you enjoy. I believe that plagiarism can be accepted by this concept.

Let’s say someone has created new products or contents based on the materials with efforts. Without this person’s base or effort, anything can exist as it is. However, somehow this person do something to the raw materials to entitle the materials more valuable, and we acknowledge the person’s efforts or value.

Many people are posting their contents onto the Steemit. These people don’t do this for charity, and neither do I. There are voting and rewarding in Steemit therefore, people are trying to compete for the popularity with each other. Through these activities, you may get a compensation or emotional reward by sharing something with others. Of course popularity may come together. Obviously, the selfish motivation works on that but mostly people are doing this with rules.

What is the essence of the rule by the way? I think it is a fair way to create value. It’s not written in a whitepaper, but it is a social convention that has been implied already. Also, those who are good at keeping those rules gain good rewards, people’s recognition.

However, plagiarism runs away from this rule. Whether you twist or copy other’s, you always put rewards and popularity as your priority rather than showing your own contents. This cannot simply be judged by whether you know it or not. So you can’t get an indulgence from the fact that you identify a quotation. Here’s what I think you may think about. It is the difference between data and information. if you know how to spot the distinction and organize it well, you don’t have to delve everywhere to avoid plagiarism because you can become a content producer.

Let’s take a look the table above. You can find @jack8831 (my ID) in the yellow box. That is the rank of my steem power being checked at . I purchased steem a bit more today and I wanted to check if there is any change on the rank. I confirmed that my rank is 644 and I have 13,566 steem power score. Of course if you put these items together, those become a piece of information.

If you call it information, it should be like something like you see above. But what if I post this information? The reaction would be obvious, “What is wrong with this person? is this person stupid or what?”

However, if you use it as data again, and you can bring someone else’s perception into this it is a different story. I can see the ID, @dubi, a fan of mine and coincidently I can see the steem power rating as well. It is amazing to find someone’s name whom I met at Steemit kr neighboring on the same list. Now, I can produce my own contents from this. Anything can be possible.

It possibly could be humorous like this. In addition, I am showing a bigger data as follows.

You can trigger other’s curiosity. Or you may say that @dubi didn’t’t use voting robot but keep voting and encouraging for good contents in kr whenever searching posts unloaded. On the other hand, @jack8831 steeps himself in his own contents. You can conclude like this.

It’s not really a big deal at all but simple wits turns data into information, and transform the information into contents. By the way, who can do this better? I think it is the young simply because they’re young and fresh. The young like you can draw wonderful contents from simple data or ordinary information. Even you can have your own piece of work using other’s contents as nourishment. It could be difficult but don’t you think you have more and better chance to try it out than I do have? I feel really sorry that you are looking for something to plagiarize.

I believe that the future of steemit depends on the shoulder of young people like you. Potentiality of Steemit which is SNS like Facebook or Twitter, and extensively and significantly influential block chain technology can be delivered by young people like you. Therefore, I would like you to take and stay right way and keep yourself away from temptation you try to deflect from.

누구나 표절은 할 수 있습니다. 물론 대부분의 사람들은 표절의 시비를 피해가려고 합니다. 그러나 표절의 유혹은 무척이나 달콤합니다. 그렇기 때문에 걸려드는 사람이 분명 나옵니다. 하지만 유독 젊은 사람들이 그런 유혹에 쉽게 빠진다고 하면 이는 사회적 문제입니다. 함께 고민하며 풀어가야 할 문제라고 저는 생각합니다.

많은 사람들이 젊은 시절엔 시간을 아껴가며 뭔가 열심히 해야 한다고 말합니다. 하지만 저는 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 저는 멍~하니 공상에 빠지거나 빈둥거리는 것 또한 젊은 시절에 있어 매우 중요한 부분이라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 하지만 뭔가 옳지 않은 방향으로 자신을 끌고 가는 것 만큼은 단호하게 피해야 한다고 생각합니다. 그것이 젊은이의 책임감입니다. 그런 저항이 없다면 자신의 젊음을 그 보다 낮은 가치와 맞바꾸는 것입니다.

다시 표절에 대한 생각을 말씀드려 보겠습니다. 저는 종종 ‘표절 행위’를 ‘부가가치’ 측면에서 바라보곤 합니다. ‘부가가치세’라는 세금이 있는데, 이게 세금을 많이 먹이기 위해 각국 정부가 짜낸 절묘한 속임수인지는 잘 모르겠으나 그 개념만큼은 곱씹어 볼만 합니다. 당신이 어떤 투자나 행동을 통해 이전에 없던 가치를 창출하거나 가치를 키워냈다면 세금을 면해주겠고, 더 이상의 가치 창출 없이 이전까지 창출된 가치를 그저 향유하고 소비하겠다면 당신이 그간 발생한 가치들에 대한 세금을 내라는 것이 부가가치세의 개념이 아닐까 합니다. 그간의 가치를 만끽하지 말라는 것이 아니라, 만끽하되 이전에 발생했던 가치들에 대해서는 적절한 보상을 하라는 것이겠죠. 저는 표절도 이와 같은 개념으로 받아들일 수 있다고 생각합니다.

어느 누군가가 이리저리 확보한 재료를 바탕으로 새로운 생산물이나 컨텐츠를 만들어 냈다고 합시다. 이 사람의 기지나 노력이 없었다면 재료가 되었던 그 어떤 것은 그냥 그 단계에서 머물고 말았을 것입니다. 하지만 그 사람의 어떤 행동 때문에 이 세상은 ‘보다 가치있는’ 어떤 것을 얻을 수 있게 되었습니다. 그렇다면 그 사람은 ‘부가가치’를 창출한 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 그 노력이나 값어치를 인정해 주게 됩니다.

많은 분들이 스팀잇에 컨텐츠를 올리고 있습니다. 저도 마찬가지지만, 이 분들이 자선사업으로 활동하는 것은 아닙니다. 스팀잇엔 보팅(voting)이 있고 보상이 넘나듭니다. 때문에 서로 좋은 컨텐츠로 인기를 얻으려 합니다. 그 과정에서 짭짤한 보상, 그리고 다른 이와 무언가를 나눈다는 심적 보상을 얻게 됩니다. 인기도 따라오고요. 분명 이기적인 동력이 작동하지만, 대개는 적절히 ‘룰(rule)’을 지키며 활동하고 있습니다.

그 ‘룰’의 실체가 무엇일까요? 저는 ‘공정한 방식을 통해 부가가치를 만들어 내자’가 아닐까 합니다. 백서(whitepaper)같은 곳에 써 있는 것은 아니지만 사람 사는 사회인지라 이미 암묵적으로 작동하는 룰이 되었습니다. 그리고 그런 룰을 잘 지킨 사람에게는 대개 좋은 보상이 갑니다. 즉, 사람들이 인정해 준다는 것이죠.

하지만 표절은 이런 룰을 비껴갑니다. 적당히 버무려 만들든, 대놓고 그대로 갖고 오든, 그 심리에는 ‘내가 키운 컨텐츠를 선보이자’ 보다는 보상과 인기가 먼저 자리 잡고 있습니다. 이것은 단순히 ‘알았다/몰랐다’의 기준으로 판단할 것이 아닙니다. 그렇기 때문에 ‘출처를 밝혔다’는 사실만으로 면제부를 받을 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.

이 과정에서 하나 생각해 볼 내용이 있습니다. 바로 data와 information의 차이입니다. 이 차이를 잘 구별하고 엮어 낼 줄 알면 굳이 표절 때문에 여기저기 기웃거릴 필요가 없습니다. 바로 여러분이 컨텐츠 생산자가 될 수 있으니까요.

위 그림을 한 번 볼까요? 노란색 박스 안에 @jack8831 (제 아이디)가 보입니다. https://steemwhales.com에서 체크해본 현재 저의 스팀파워(steem power) 순위입니다. 저는 오늘 스팀(steem)을 조금 더 매입하였고, 그래서 순위 변동이 어떤지 살펴보려 했습니다. 순위는 644등이고 13,566만큼의 SP(Steem Power)를 보유하고 있음을 확인하였습니다. 물론 이 사항들을 종합하면 하나의 정보(information)가 됩니다.

“연어는 13,566SP로 스팀파워에서 644등을 달리고 있다.”

굳이, 이것을 정보라고 하면 위와 같겠지요. 하지만 제가 이 내용을 가지고 포스팅을 한다면? 반응은 뻔합니다. “쟤 뭐야? 놀고 자빠졌네”

하지만 이 내용을 다시 data로 사용하고, 거기에 사람이 갖는 인식의 힘을 좀 빌리면 얘기는 달라집니다. 때마침 제가 팬이기도한 @dubi님의 아이디가 보입니다. 우연치 않게 스팀파워 순위가 붙어 있습니다. 스팀잇 kr 에서 만나뵙던 분과 리스트에 붙어 있는 신기한 장면입니다. 비로소 저는 컨테츠를 만들어 낼 수 있게 됩니다. 어떤 식이든 가능합니다.

“@dubi님 반갑습니다. 살짝 이겨 드렸습니다”

이렇게 농담을 날리며 풋풋한 이웃 모드로 갈 수도 있을 것입니다. 또는 다음과 같이 데이터를 좀 더 모아서..

“@dubi님과 @jack8831이 큐레이션 성과(curation rewards)에 차이가 나는 이유, @dubi님은 봇(voting robot)을 쓴 것인가?”

라는 식으로 사람들의 궁금증을 자아내게 할 수도 있습니다. 알고 봤더니 봇을 쓴게 아니라 kr에 올라오는 많은 포스팅을 찾아다니면서 좋은 글에 보팅하고 격려를 하며 다니셨더라.. 하지만 @jack8831은 자기 글에만 폭 빠져 살았더라.. 이런 결론을 내려볼 수도 있습니다.

정말 별 것 아니지만, 이런 기지(機智)가 데이터를 정보로 변환시키고, 정보를 컨텐츠로 탈바꿈하게 합니다. 그런데 이런 작업을 더 잘 할 수 있는 사람들이 누구인가요? 저는 젊은 분들이라고 생각합니다. 젊기 때문에.. 더 생기 발랄하기 때문에 여러분은 저같은 세대의 사람보다 소소한 데이터, 그저 그래 보이는 정보를 가지고도 멋진 컨텐츠를 뽑아 낼 수 있습니다. 그리고 타인의 컨텐츠를 자신의 자양분 삼아 더 그윽한 작품을 만들어 낼 수도 있습니다. 처음엔 쉽지 않겠지만 분명 그렇게 해볼 수 있는 시간과 기회가 저같은 사람보다는 더 있지 않은가요? 그런데 표절할 대상을 찾아 기웃거리다니요.. 저는 그 점이 너무 안타까울 뿐입니다.

저는 스팀잇(steemit)의 미래가 젊은 분들의 어깨에 달려 있다고 생각합니다. 페이스북과 트위터 같은 sns, 그리고 앞으로 더 크게 영향력을 펼쳐갈 블록체인 기술이 결합된 스팀잇.. 이 스팀잇의 가능성을 온전히 흡수해 낼 수 있는 것은 바로 젊은 세대 그대들입니다. 그래서 저는 여러분이 잠시 비껴가고자 했던 유혹에서 벗어나 정도(正道)를 걷길 바랄 뿐입니다.
