Have you ever heard about the Korean Wave? Not yet? Then.. how about the ‘Psy’, who is one of the most popular singers in the world? 한류에 대해 들어본 적 있으신지? 아직 못 들어보셨다고? 그렇담.. 싸이는 아시겠지? 세계에서 가장 유명한 가수 중 한명이니 말이다.
Korean Wave is a kind of neologism about global popularity of Korean culture. From K-dramas to K-pop, the Korean Wave is already widespread. You can just knock on the door and ask your daughter, “Sweety~ what are you doing?” She would answer “Mom, I’m listening to Exo’s new songs now~” 한류는 세계적으로 일고 있는 인기 있는 한국 문화에 대한 신조어다. 한국 드라마에서 가요에 이르기까지, 한류는 이미 널리 퍼져있다. 그저 딸의 방을 노크하고 한 번 물어보길 바란다. “아가야~ 지금 뭐하니?” 아마도 “엄마, 전 지금 엑소의 신곡을 듣고 있는 중이에요”라는 대답이 올 수도 있다.
What do you think this new wave starting from a tiny country in Asia? Well.. I think it was from an accident, the Los Angeles riots in 1992. I’m sure it’s absolutely an important factor for making it. (Believe It Or Not) 대체 어떻게 아시아의 작은 한 나라에서 이런 물결이 일 수 있었다고 생각되는가? 글쎄.. 난 이게 우연한 일에서 비롯되었다고 생각한다. 바로 1992년에 있었던 LA 대폭동 말이다. 난 이게 이런 흐름이 생기게 된 중요한 요소중 한 가지라고 확신할 수 있다 (물론, 믿거나 말거나.)
The 1992 Los Angeles riots was started in South Central area in LA and spread out, especially into Korean-town. Historically there were so many Korean-Americans lived in, and they coudln’t help avoiding big damages at that time. Most second generation Korean-Americans just thought themselves a member of society with Caucasian until the riots began. 1992년의 LA폭동은 사우스센트럴 지역에서 발발하여 널리, 특히 코리아 타운으로, 퍼져나갔다. 역사적으로 그곳엔 많은 한국 교포들이 살고 있는데, 그러다보니 그들은 당시 큰 피해를 피할 수 없었다. 그러한 폭동이 발발하기 전까지 대부분의 교포2세들은 자신들을 백인사회의 일부쯤 된다고 생각하고 있었다.
People sometimes called them ‘Banana coved with yellow peel’, means ‘Yellow race outside, Caucasian inside’. It was a sort of funny metaphor about their mind. But the situation was changed seriously. No one helped them, and most police officiers just let the riots go. As a result Korean-Americans lost their properties, stores, houses, and most of all, their pride. 사람들은 이들을 겉은 노랗지만 속은 하얗다(피부는 동양인이나 생각은 백인과 같은) 는 뜻에서 ‘노란껍질에 싸인 바나나’라고 부르곤 했다. 아마도 그들의 마인드에 대한 우스개스러운 비유인 셈이다. 어쨌거나 사태는 심각하게 변해갔다. 아무도 그들을 도와주지 않았고, 심지어 경찰관들은 그저 폭동이 지속되도로 지켜만 볼 뿐이었다. 그 결과로 한국 교포들은 재산과 상점, 집은 물론, 특히나, 자존심까지 잃고 말았다.
At that time, a new idol group ‘Seotaiji and Boys’, a successful Hip-Hop pioneer in Korea began to guide how to conflate Hip-Hop rythem with Korean lyrics. It made for the second generation Korean-Americans musicians to have new chance to go into new music market in Korea, the homeland of their parents!
바로 그 당시, 새로운 아이돌 ‘서태지와 아이들’이 한국에서 힙합을 개척하고 있었다. 이들은 힙합의 리듬에 한국어 가사를 어떻게 접목해야 하는지 길을 제시하였다. 이들의 활동이 미 교포 2세 음악가들에게 새로이 한국 음악시장으로 뛰어들 수 있는 기회를 열어주었다. 바로 그들 부모의 고향 말이다!
After then, Korean music market absorbed the American music directly. Now, Many famous music agencies like JYP, YG family and so on.. always share their creative songs with fans in the world. 그 후로, 한국 음악은 미국 음악을 직접적으로 받아들이고 있다. 지금은 JYP나 YG패밀리 같은 유명 기획사들이 세계 도처의 팬들과 창의적인 노래들을 함께 나누고 있는 것이다.
